Superdefense Triple Action Moisturizer SPF 25, for Normal to Oily Skin
($39.50
for 1.7 ounces)
has a great name and is sold with the tag line makes SPF alone seem
almost primitive. I assume what Clinique means is that today we know
so much about how skin functions and the role sun damage plays in
hurting healthy skin, that we recognize it takes more than just
standard active ingredients to protect and restore skin. If this was
their intention, then I agree! Thats because, given what we now know
about antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, and barrier-repair
ingredients, and the way their presence in sunscreens can make them
even more effective on skin, it is a good idea to examine sunscreens
beyond whats in their active ingredient list. This particular product
is another winner, featuring an in-part avobenzone sunscreen in a
light, silky feeling lotion base suitable for normal to oily skin.
According to information in the September 30, 2004, issue of the cosmetics industry newsletter The Rose Sheet,
the sunscreens in all of Cliniques Superdefense moisturizers are
contained in a floating polymer matrix to prevent skin irritation.
This technology, which is relatively new, potentially can keep active
ingredients from penetrating the skin, which can lead to irritation.
Studies of products that combine UVA-protective actives, such as
avobenzone and octinoxate (both used in Cliniques Superdefense
products), with various silicone ingredients showed mixed results. In
some trials, the silicones slowed the penetration of the actives (thus
reducing the potential for a sensitizing reaction), but other trials
noted accelerated penetration of the actives, indicating that the
specific type of silicone emulsion included must be carefully
coordinated with the specific active ingredients (Source: Journal of Cosmetic Science, volume 55, issue 6, NovemberDecember 2004, pages 509518).
Whether or not Clinique has succeeded in their efforts to create a
gentler sunscreen remains to be seen. Further, this technology cannot
guarantee that you wont react negatively to one or more of the active
ingredientsor potentially to other ingredients in the productbecause
there are so many other factors that come into play, such as what your
skin is sensitive to. What is important about this product is its
broad-spectrum sun protection and blend of antioxidants to support the
health of skin and reduce inflammation. Clinique deserves commendation
for combining those elements in a cosmetically elegant product. The
next step for Clinique is to move away from jar packaging to help
ensure the stability of all the antioxidants included in the product,
since that would bring them a lot further along in helping make good on
their claims.
